Use of Artificial Intelligence by Patrol Officers

Policies are the foundation of your organization and layout the guidelines for the success of your staff members. If you do not tell the staff what is expected of them, how can you guide them to success?

As technology continues to evolve and make its way into law enforcement operations, we must have policies in place governing these new technological advancements. Specifically, we need to have policies managing the use of text-based artificial intelligence in the completion of case reports and associated forms.

At this point, these technologies should be prohibited from use in case reports and associated forms. The investigating law enforcement official must be the original author of these documents. Allowing someone, or something, else to write these reports could jeopardize officer credibility as well as officer’s perception, which is a crucial component in areas of constitutional analysis.

This policy is limited to text-based technologies such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok and others. There is a use for artificial intelligence in investigations, but clear guidelines need to be set to manage its usage and should be considered in investigative policies.
