Welcome to the You’ve Just Been Involved in a Shooting – Now What? training course. This program will walk officers through the immediate steps after being involved in a shooting or serious use of force incident. The program will cover securing the scene, giving a public safety statement, handling evidence, removing the officer from the scene, and the importance of time and administrative leave. Also covered will be the different types of investigations an officer can expect and when and how interviews and reports are handled. Lastly, this program will touch on the short and long-term effects of involvement in a critical incident and what it takes to get to work.

This course will also focus on areas including: 

  • Securing the scene, providing public safety statements, and managing evidence
  • Understanding the types of investigations, interview protocols, and administrative actions
  • Addressing the short- and long-term impacts of critical incidents on officer health and readiness

Instructor: Attorney Ronald J. Pugliese

Ronald “Jay” Pugliese Jr. is an attorney and twenty year veteran police officer. Jay retired in 2020 at the rank of Sergeant but spent most of his career handling criminal investigations. During his tenure as a police officer, Jay worked major crimes, a cold case homicide, financial crimes, and arson cases. He was also the department’s computer forensics examiner, cell phone forensics examiner, and video forensics examiner. Jay now works as an attorney specializing in labor and employment law with much of his practice dedicated to representing police officers and police unions. Additionally, Jay is a certified Force Science Analyst making him well suited to assist law enforcement officers who have been involved in a shooting or serious use of force incident.
