Welcome to the Cooperation During Use of Force Investigations training course. The comprehensive analysis of a use of force encounter often requires cooperation amongst participants with varied manners of expertise. This presentation will explore a real-world case in which investigators were required to examine the manner of death of a subject following the application of less-lethal force by responding officers. The speaker will demonstrate how information drawn from experts in the disciplines of law, psychology, biomechanics, engineering, and decision-making was combined to reach a reliable conclusion to the matter at hand.

This course will also focus on areas including: 

  • Multidisciplinary collaboration in use of force investigations
  • Case study involving less-lethal force and in-custody death
  • Integrating expert analysis to reach informed conclusions

Instructor: Corporal Kevin Selverian

Kevin Selverian is a 28-year veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police. Kevin co-founded the department Use of Force Section and currently serves as a Use of Force Specialist. He has trained thousands of officers, civilians, and legal professionals regarding arrest and control techniques, the lawful application of force, and recognized use of force investigative strategies. He has conducted numerous comprehensive analyses related to a variety of application of force cases and provided expert testimony pertinent to use of force concerns in criminal, civil, and administrative venues. Kevin is certified as an Advanced Specialist in the Behavioral Analysis of Force Encounters by the Force Science Institute. He has also received certification in Advanced Human Factors for Force Investigations and Analysis from the Association of Force Investigators. Additionally, Kevin holds the positions of partner and analyst at Force Analysis and Multimedia Review, LLC., and serves as an advisory board member for the Association of Force Investigators.
