Welcome to Finding Our Way Forward, Mental Health & De-Escalation training course. In these opening keynotes from the 2022 DLG Use of Force Summit, Attorney Eric Daigle examines the current status of legal cases regarding use of force, qualified immunity, mental health response, and the tactic of de-escalation from a national perspective.

The Finding Our Way Forward module will focus on areas including:

  • Use of Force and Qualified Immunity legal cases
  • Identifying national issues and statistical clarity regarding use of force
  • Looking for a way forward together through legal protection, better policy and training, and community involvement

The De-Escalation and Mental Health Response module will focus on areas including:

  • Importance of words, their use, and their interpretation regarding use of force
  • Court’s interpretation of de-escalation and clearly established law related to mental health response
  • Review the tactic of de-escalation and its intent to place officers in a position of advantage when dealing with individuals under the effects of excited delirium, or irrational, unpredictable, or suicidal persons
