This course covers issues such as stereotyping, prejudice, bias, and hate to introduce students to cultural awareness and diversity. Barriers to cross-cultural communication, how to improve such communication, and intentional and unintentional discrimination will be discussed. Students will be able to relate cultural diversity to policing on both an individual and organizational basis.

This course will also focus on the following topics:

  • Culture’s impact on the community and the police service
  • Identifying the context structure of cultures.
  • Recognizing the relationship between bias, prejudice and cultural diversity.
  • Defining stereotyping and ethnocentrism and how it affects individuals and organizations
  • Understanding the concept of power and its relationship between individuals, organizations, and personal actions or inactions
