Welcome to the How We Train Matters as Much as What We Train: Teaching Use of Force Decision Making training course. How you present and share information during training is just as important as the material you are training. This course will discuss training methods and techniques to build better use of force decision makers.  Our goal is training new officers to retain, retrieve and transfer their knowledge to perform sound decision making in use of force situations where time is of the essence.

This course will also focus on areas including: 

  • Effective training methods for decision-making under pressure
  • Enhancing knowledge retention, retrieval, and transfer
  • Developing confident, well-prepared use of force decision makers

Instructor: Lieutenant Michael Creter

Michael Creter is a Lieutenant with the Hartford Police Department, serving the city for more than eighteen years. He is the currently commander of the Southwest District and the Street Crimes Units. He has worked in the patrol division as an officer and supervisor, and was an operator and team leader of the Emergency Response Team. He has been a full-time academy instructor, supervisor, or adjunct instructor for over thirteen years. Michael is a Master Instructor in the L.O.C.K.U.P. Arrest & Control system, training new and current instructors in the system throughout the country. As an instructor, Michael specializes in teaching Use of Force, Defensive Tactics, and Less Lethal Force Options. He also provides training, analysis and review for other police agencies and organizations.
